Color Psychology and Interview Apparel

After months and months of resume rewrites, cover letter drafts, and mountains of applications you’ve finally secured an interview for the job of your dreams. Despite all the preparations you’ve taken to get to this spot, you forgot to consider one thing: what you’re going to wear! While we all know it’s important to look professional and put together at an interview, one thing that’s rarely discussed is how the colors of your clothing can really help influence the way you’re perceived.

Color Psychology is the study of how hues can influence human behavior and perception. Harvest tones make us hungry, earth tones make us reflective, and bright colors make us feel confident. This is why it’s so important to consider the colors you are wearing: choosing the right hue can positively affect your interview. So what should you wear? Well, that depends on the type of job you’re applying for and how you want the interviewer to perceive you.

Traditional

If you’re applying for a more traditional job in fields such as law, business, and banking you want to come off as a trustworthy professional. Research shows that donning blues, blacks, or grays will help you come across as someone confident and capable. Essentially, go for the classics and add a bit of personality by throwing on fun and colorful accessories such as socks, necklaces, and ties.

Creative

For those seeking positions in more creative fields, it’s important that you go for a more unexpected color scheme. By wearing any shade of green, purple, or yellow, you’ll come off as creative, easy-going, and unique. Take your look to the next level by adding exciting statement accessories (jewelry, scarves, ties, socks, bags, et al.) that are eye catching and engaging. Doing so will further showcase your individuality and ability to spot a great piece of wearable art.

So the next time you’re prepping for an interview, take some time to think about what you want your clothes to say about you. While we are often told “don’t judge a book by its cover”, our brains can’t help but subconsciously make assumptions. Use this to your advantage. Have your wardrobe reiterate the qualities you’re trying to showcase in your interview by wearing specific hues. Not only will you have a leg up on the competition, but your confidence will go through the roof.
