March is Women’s History Month! This month’s book spotlights the journey of women in medicine.
This Side of Doctoring by Dr. Eliza Lo Chin is a collection of stories from 100 women about their time practicing medicine, speaking on the good, the bad, and the ugly. In a mix of poetry, narratives and essays, women tell emotional recounts of experiences they have had and how they manage balancing work and home life, as well as overcoming expectations and stereotypes. It includes experiences from some of the first prominent women in medicine to women presently going through medical school. This Side of Doctoring is a powerful reflection of the intersectionality of the identities and responsibilities of women in medicine.
“Women must be willing to go up, to be knocked down again and again, before the general hospital will finally be opened…It is perfectly evident from the records that the opposition to women physicians has rarely been based upon any sincere observation, but upon an intense dislike to the idea that they should be so capable.” – Mary Putnam Jacobi, Founding President of the Women’s Medical Association of New York City
