Dear Aunt Martha: Changing Majors!

Dear Aunt Martha,

I’ve decided to change my major, but I don’t know how to tell my family about it. I know they’ll ask me about the job prospects of my new major, but to be honest, I’m still exploring the subject and have no idea what I would want to do with a degree in this area. All I know is that I really really love all the classes that I’ve taken in the department. What should I say?

Best,

Anxious Student

Dear Anxious Student,

I am so absolutely overjoyed to hear that you have found your interests within HumEc! It is definitely hard to explain to people who may not know much about our College and what each major is about…Especially since each of our majors tend to have such unconventional names.

Here are some general guidelines you can use when describing your major:

All Human Ecology majors are centered on “the human experience,” with each major focusing on a different aspect of the human experience. For example, HBHS focuses on biology/health, while DEA focuses on design. Human Ecology majors aim to change the lives of individuals and the population at large.

Come into the CEC for more specific information about each major as well as the typical internship and career fields that students and alumni from each major have entered in the past. Who knows, they may be worth a read to help you answer your own questions about the future!

As always, the CEC’s Career Assistants are available to talk to you about the uniqueness of each major and to help you think of ways to communicate the positive attributes of your new major to your family!

Warmest Wishes,

Aunt Martha
