Sarah Dephtereos PAM ’13 joined us on Tuesday September 25th for the Young Alumni Lunch Series.
In her role on the Strategy and Innovation team at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Sarah combines research, data analysis and project management responsibilities to guide the organization through changes in the healthcare industry. In her 3+ years at MSKCC, she has created treatment volume projection models for our outpatient sites, conducted extensive market research on growth opportunities, and developed interactive presentations to update employees and the Board of Directors on MSKCC’s strategies. Sarah is also pursuing an MBA at NYU Stern School of Business, with concentrations in Strategy and Change Management. Prior to joining the MSKCC team, Sarah worked for two years at a healthcare-focused consulting firm.
During our conversation, Sarah focused her remarks around topics including how she approached the job search with a Human Ecology degree, successful networking, determining whether or not to pursue graduate school, and much more! Here is some of the advice she had to say:
How did Human Ecology prepare you for your career field? Human Ecology taught me how to look at problems with the larger economic, legislative, and social ecosystems. The PAM courses focused on healthcare economics have been particularly helpful in my early career.
Do you have any advice for those interested in going to graduate school for an MBA? It is better to do this after spending some time working in the real world.
What advice do you have for the job search for undergrad students? Go to the Career Fair and talk to smaller companies. Remember that your first job is important, but not forever. It is easier to get your second job than your first!
