Networking is Not Working: Stop Collecting Business Cards and Start Making Meaningful Connections By Derek Coburn suggests a nontraditional approach to networking and emphasizes the importance of becoming a “CONNECTOR”. In the first chapter of the book, he states that, “your level of success will be directly tied to your ability to interact with other professionals…” ( pg. 16).
This book will help you learn how to become the ultimate connector and an ultimate resource for others. It will assist you in identifying and developing relationships with world-class professionals and how to position yourself for more quality introductions. One key takeaway from the book is that networking should go beyond an event. There should always be a follow-up and further communication to strengthen these connections in-person as well as online. Additionally, it is important to ensure that your community is comprised of like-minded professionals with whom you have developed mutually beneficial relationships. This network will motivate you to share your vision and help you propel your goals in the right direction. The author concludes the book by stating, “ the biggest benefit to be had from all of this is that as the quality and quantity of your ideal relationships increase, so too will your business and life” (pg. 155).
