The first book is Expect to Win: 10 Proven Strategies For Thriving in the Workplace by Carla A. Harris. Harris shares tips, advice and strategies of how to survive in the workplace as she recounts her own experiences climbing the corporate ladder and the victories and missteps she faced along the way. The second book is The Memo: What Women of Color Need to Know to Secure a Seat at the Table by Minda Harts. Harts recognizes the many challenges that women of color face when entering the workplace as she strays away from a one-size-fits-all approach. She offers an action tool kit and pep talk on how to address outright discrimination, micro-aggressions and systematic racism in the workplace as she encourages women to secure their bags and make changes along the way for those behind them. Some of her advice includes investing in yourself, understanding the politics and culture of your workplace, negotiating salaries and even about “appropriate” hairstyles!
