By: June R. Payne-Palacio and Deborah D. Canter
For the month of November, we will be reading The Profession of Dietetics: A Team Approach by June R. Payne-Palacio and Deborah D. Canter to learn about the process of becoming a dietitian and the benefits of the career. It is possible to add a Dietetics track to your undergraduate coursework in the College of Human Ecology, so this book will provide guidance to interested students.
One author, Dr. June R. Payne-Palacio earned her PhD in nutrition from Kansas State University. The co-author, Dr. D. Canter earned her PhD from the University of Tennessee and was on the faculty at Kansas State University for many years in their Department of Human Ecology.
This book is broken into five sections to walk the reader through all aspects of the profession. Part one provides information about the profession’s history and its origins in the Middle Ages and progresses through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Part two explains what the Dietetics profession is in the present day and what it means to work together through a team approach. Part three is titled “Preparing for Practice” and this section details the educational, training, and certification requirements to become a registered dietitian. Part four looks at the professional organizations involved in the field and the benefits of joining a professional association. The fifth and final section looks at future trends in the profession and how to bridge the gap between being a student and working professional in the field.
