How to Maintain and Develop Academic and Professional Relationships Remotely

Even without face-to-face interaction, here are some tips to remain connected with contacts in the academic and professional world.

Find online opportunities to network

Especially during this time, more companies are holding events or conferences online. Take advantage of these opportunities to network with professionals from all over the world. You can find these types of events on Handshake under their “Events” tab as well as CUelinks, where you can reach out to Cornell alumni or LinkedIn! Put yourself out there and attend events. Come ready with questions, listen, take notes, and mingle with both your peers and representatives in your field of choice. Set up one-on-one meetings frequently

Although we may not be able to meet with people in-person, we can still take advantage of interacting over video. Reach out to your contact via email or any other scheduling platform to chat with them over Zoom, Skype, Google Hangout or any other video conferencing platform. Having these “face-to-face” conversations frequently during this time can allow you to continue to develop those relationships even remotely. Ensure that when scheduling your meeting you have topics of conversation and/or questions. For academic pursues, you can also set up meetings with professors or attend their office hours more frequently over zoom so they have the chance to get to know you!

Reach out!
Even when you are unable to meet with your contacts frequently over video, make sure to reach out when you can! Inform and update them on your involvements during this time. This can be a great opportunity to discuss your future goals and interests. Also, take the chance to proactively seek out advice, resources or suggestions. These connections aren’t solely about us, but truly learning from our interactions as well. Inquire about your contact and their professional career (as well as how their personal lives have adapted during this time, if appropriate). Learning more about them and how their interests align with your own can be key in understanding the goal for your interaction.

Ask to be connected with others!
With those who you’ve already established a solid relationship, don’t be afraid to ask for referrals to other people or professionals in your field of interests. More likely than not, they will be more than willing to pass on your information or provide you with a new contact!

Be yourself and make a good impression virtually!
At the end of the day, we are all learning how to navigate this “new normal” so just be yourself as you would in-person, with the same etiquette and attention. Continue to stay engaged and active when interacting online! Be genuine in your interactions and who you reach out to!
