As the semester comes to a close as well as the year 2020, the December 2020 Article of the Month implores us to reflect on the lessons from this year that we hope to continue to carry into our career paths going forward. This month’s article recognizes the uncertainty and challenges we experienced as communities and individuals and how we can use this to propel us into our future! Although we know there may still be trials ahead, here are three lessons this article highlights as we approach the new opportunities to come:
1. Adapting is everything. For our success, it is important that we are able to pivot and adjust to new circumstances. The author states that, “Adaptability is demonstrated in your critical thinking skills, grit and ability to stay focused amid distractions.” To develop adaptability, we must start with our perspective and focus on the positive takeaways from every situation to see how we can grow!
2. Communication matters more than ever. As remote work becomes more common, it is vital now more than ever to continue to improve our communication skills, as well as understanding how that may differ over a virtual platform. To be even better communicators, the author emphasizes the importance of brevity, honesty and clarity as we listen more and communicate more effectively.
3. Empathy empowers everyone. This year has brought many struggles for ourselves but also those around us. The ability to understand the various situations those in our circles may face and to offer a helping hand can be a great way for us to each accomplish our desires in the new year. Building on those meaningful connections will not only aid the next person but also empower us in our path.
Lastly, this article pushes us to embrace all the moments from this year, both good and bad, as they can allow us to grow personally and professionally. We must accept that the difficulties from the past year won’t disappear but our mindset can truly make the difference! As we use the lessons of adaptability, communication and empathy, let’s continue to reflect on other lessons from this year that we will choose to live by!
