September 2025 Book of the Month

How To Find Fulfilling Work

By: Roman Krznaric

As career fairs, deadlines, and internship opportunities start to fill the calendar this month, I’ve been diving into How to Find Fulfilling Work by Roman Krznaric – a book that couldn’t have come at a better time. In it, you’ll find it’s not just about landing a job; it’s about discovering what truly makes work meaningful for you.

As someone who has faced their fair share of confusion and uncertainty when it comes to careers, this book resonated with me deeply. If you’ve ever felt unsure about your path or overwhelmed by options, I think you’ll find it just as powerful.

The book is thoughtfully divided into sections such as The Age of Fulfillment, Giving Meaning to Work, The Longing for Freedom, and my favorite: Act First, Reflect Later. Each chapter is filled with other professionals’ personal stories of both triumph and failure, reminding us that the journey to a meaningful career isn’t always linear, but it’s always worth it.

What struck me most was the reminder that we often overthink ourselves into inaction. Krznaric writes about how we’re wired to “magnify everything that could go wrong,” which can make us doubt our potential before we’ve even begun. But this also got me thinking what if – what if we took that first step anyway? What if it worked out better than we ever imagined?

That idea has stayed with me; that sometimes the only way forward is to act, even before we feel completely ready. Taking small steps, learning as we go, and allowing ourselves to grow through experience is often the key to unlocking something truly fulfilling. Finding a career you love doesn’t happen overnight, and that’s okay. What matters is staying open, curious, and committed to building something that feels right for you. Whether it takes a few months or a few years, the path is yours to create. And in the process, you’ll not only find work that fulfills you, but also communities, mentors, and friendships that will shape your life in beautiful and inspiring ways.

If you’re feeling uncertain about where to begin, or just need a place to talk it through, I wholeheartedly recommend visiting the Human Ecology Career Exploration Center (CEC) in MVR 1203. We have some amazing resources and guidance to help you start building a future you’re excited about!

Hope to see you soon! Best of luck!
