Cornell University is located on the traditional homelands of the Gayogo̱hó꞉nǫ’ (the Cayuga Nation). The Gayogo̱hó꞉nǫ’ are members of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, an alliance of six sovereign Nations with a historic and contemporary presence on this land. The Confederacy precedes the establishment of Cornell University, New York state, and the United States of America. We acknowledge the painful history of Gayogo̱hó꞉nǫ’ dispossession, and honor the ongoing connection of Gayogo̱hó꞉nǫ’ people, past and present, to these lands and waters.
This land acknowledgment has been reviewed and approved by the traditional Gayogo̱hó꞉nǫ’ leadership.
At the CEC we believe that diversity of background and opinion strengthen our work. We are making a conscious effort to promote equity with the goal of having all students feel welcomed and well served and achieve more representation.
Our immediate efforts
- Every semester, our staff goes through extensive training on our resources and services. Included in our staff training this semester was a discussion about diversity, led by Janet Shortall from Care & Crisis Services and Patricia Gonzalez from Multicultural Student Leadership and Empowerment. The purpose of this was to acknowledge our own identities and the identities of our peers to best serve you all at the College of Human Ecology. Alongside your professional development, we want you to know about us, and we want to know about you all as well. To open this conversation, we have updated our bios to tell you all a bit more about ourselves as people, and we welcome everyone with open arms to use our services. Please visit the Career Assistant whose experiences and identities you feel comfortable with.
- We have a new page on our website where we display the workshops and events of the semester. After the workshops, we will post the slides and the recording (with closed captioning) to allow those who could not attend in real-time to view the workshops.
Long term actions
We hope to…
- Recruit more diverse CAs (major, year, gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, sexuality, religion, etc.) who more accurately represent our student body to better serve everyone
- Make our services more equitable by acknowledging barriers and limitations of our existing resources and services and making sure we are able to serve all HumEc students fully.
- Introduce new workshops and invite diverse guest speakers to talk specifically about diversity and/or their experiences in the workplace.
- Stay up to date and advertise the College Diversity Committee initiatives and programs
- Make your voices heard. We want to know any feedback you have and continuously improve on our services.
This list will continue to grow and we will continue to strive to make the CEC a place where everyone can thrive. Thank you for being patient with us.
